What’s relatively unique to this coffee from Ethiopia, is that it’s traceable down to farm level — something that’s hard to do in the manner coffee is typically traded in Ethiopia. Back in 2012, Cafe Imports CEO, Jason Long began the process of working directly with producers, in this case Bekele Gemeda. Stories of our friend Noah Namowicz backpacking wads of Ethiopian Birr to pay the premiums directly to participating producers have become fabled.

Like other coffees from Yirgacheffe, Bekele’s coffee shows delightful aromatics and stone fruit, and maybe thanks to the coffee hailing from a very particular place, those flavours and aromatics have snapped into greater focus.

Gloria’s farm, El Nogal, which means "the walnut tree" in Spanish, spans just one and a half hectares – a common size for the region, where farmers cultivate and process coffee on small parcels of land. Situated at an impressive 2,000 meters above sea level, the farm is nestled in the rugged hills surrounding El Tabor. I’ve walked similar steep hills on Colombian farms, and boy oh boy it is hard yakka.

Gloria, a lifelong resident of El Tabor, is part of the respected Gómez family, well-known and admired within the local coffee-growing community. She and her three siblings began their coffee-growing journey at their parents' farm, La Argentina. Over the years, each of them managed to save enough to purchase their own plots, though they still collaborate to oversee their shared plantations during the harvest season.

My last trip to Kenya was back in 2014, with Andrew Kelly of Small Batch, and before then with Tim Wendelboe during my stint with him. It's the origin I had the strongest connection with, and for many years the Kenyan cup profile was my favourite. It still ranks incredibly high, and remains the origin I get most excited by – Kenyan's typically have such vibrant, exciting profiles, so it's hard not be bushy-tailed when cupping harvest. 

Mugaya Factory was established in 1975 under Mutira Farmers’ Cooperative Society. Towering a 1570m above sea level, along with red-volcanic soil, the coffees from here are rich, plump and have plenty of ripe berry fruit.

Jairo Arcila is a third-generation coffee grower from Quindio, Colombia. He is married to Luz Helena Salazar and they have two children together, Carlos and Felipe Arcila. Jairo’s first job was at Colombia’s second-largest exporter, working as their Mill Manager for over 40 years until his retirement in 2019.

An underwater fermentation of around 30 hours results in a uniform fermentation, emphasising aromatics and lifting acidity. This espresso is a rewarding all-rounder. Creamy and sweet, with flashes of red apple and praline served black. Served with milk, expect sweet malt and milk chocolate.
